Computer visual effects experts behind Hollywood blockbusters are gathering in Bournemouth for a festival showcasing the latest animation technology.

The BFX Festival includes workshops and talks from specialists who worked on films including Gravity and Maleficent.

Festival director Sofronis Efstathiou said the event would "celebrate the best visual effects and animation in the world".

The event is designed to provide an insight into careers in the industry.

The four-day event at the Bournemouth International Centre is organised by the National Centre for Computer Animation (NCCA) at Bournemouth University and the Faculty of Media and Performance at the Arts University Bournemouth.

Twenty two companies from around the world are represented at the festival, many of which employ staff who have studied in Bournemouth.

Mr Efstathiou said: "Bournemouth has been creating some of the best graduates who work in those industries, so we have a very tight relationship with those people who come here to recruit our students."

In 2011, more than 70 graduates from the NCCA worked on films that were nominated for their visual effects at the 84th Oscars.

Bournemouth's National Centre for Computer Animation (NCCA)

  • The NCCA was established in 1989 to provide undergraduate and postgraduate courses in computer visualisation and animation.
  • Its founding philosophy was to be a "marriage between art and science" of creating animation for film, TV and advertising using computers.
  • More than 60 graduates from the NCCA were employed by various production houses working on the Oscar-winning Gravity, while 40 worked on James Cameron's Avatar.
  • Production houses, including London-based Framestore, have established regional units in Bournemouth in recent years.
