Gas supplies have been restored to 400 homes in the Preston area of Weymouth after residents were cut off for more than two days.

Water got into the gas main after a pipe cracked on Tuesday, affecting properties in 15 streets.

Engineers were called in from Portsmouth, Surrey and Sussex to help fix the problem.

Most residents had their gas restored on Wednesday evening with the remainder reconnected on Thursday morning.

Hannah Brett of gas company SGN said: "We have now visited every affected property. Our engineers have carried out a safety check and reconnected gas supplies."

SGN said customers who were left without gas for more than 24 hours would be compensated.
