More than 60 firefighters took more than seven hours to tackle a blaze in the roof of a thatched cottage in a Dorset village.

Crews were alerted at about 13:30 GMT when a resident in Fontmell Magna spotted smoke.

Dorset Fire and Rescue Service sent five fire engines but requested a further five on arrival. Two more engines were needed later.

A total of 62 firefighters tackled the fire, which destroyed the roof.

Dorset Police and the Red Cross fire and emergency support team were also called to the scene.

Fire crews stayed at the site until about 20:30 GMT.

An investigation into the cause, which is not thought to be arson, is under way.

The A350 was reopened at 07:30 GMT after being closed overnight.
