Cows die after lamp starts barn fire in Martinstown

Three cows and a calf have died in a barn fire in Dorset.

The blaze broke out in the early hours at the dairy farm in Martinstown, near Dorchester, when a defective heat lamp set 12 bales of hay alight.

Dorset Fire and Rescue crews were called at 05:25 GMT and put out the burning hay, which had already been removed by the farmer.

The cattle - three heifers and a bull calf - died of the effects of breathing in smoke, crews said.

The fire was extinguished by 06:00.
