A 10-year-old boy is in a critical condition after being struck by a car while riding his scooter in Dorset.

The boy suffered severe head and internal injuries when he was knocked down in Weymouth on Saturday evening.

Police said they were called just before 20:00 GMT to the crash involving a Jeep Grand Cherokee in Louviers Road, near the junction of Canberra Road.

The boy, who is from the Littlemoor area of the town, was taken by helicopter to hospital.

The road was closed for several hours for accident investigations.

Dorset Police has appealed for information from anyone who saw the boy on the scooter or the burgundy Jeep, being driven by a 53-year-old man, in the moments before the crash.
