Dorset Police has referred itself to the police watchdog in connection with a murder inquiry.

Elliot Handley, 46, from Hampshire, was found dead at a car dealership in The Grove, Dorchester, on Tuesday.

Three men aged 69, 47 and 43, arrested on suspicion of murder, have been bailed pending further inquiries.

The Dorset force said it had notified the Independent Police Complaints Commission as it has had "prior contact with people involved".

A spokeswoman refused to reveal who the force had previous contact with, but said it could be "those arrested, the victim or witnesses".

Mr Handley, from Eastleigh, was last seen in Truro, Cornwall, on Thursday 21 May. Police believe he then made his way to Dorset.

Officers have appealed to anyone who may have had contact with Mr Handley between Thursday and Tuesday to come forward.

He is described as white, of slim build and average height and clean shaven with short dark hair, with a tattoo on both arms.

He was possibly wearing a light brown jumper over a blue-green T-shirt and a black padded jacket.

Officers believe he was also carrying a blue North Face rucksack with yellow straps and an acoustic guitar.
