Plans for a 2,000-seater beach sports stadium in Sandbanks have been turned down by planning chiefs.

Developer and former AFC Bournemouth chairman Eddie Mitchell submitted the plans to develop the current pavilion site.

The scheme, which also included 44 beach huts, was rejected by Poole Borough Council's planning committee.

The application was turned down due to parking concerns, the impact on wildlife and loss of open space.

The stadium had been recommended for approval.

Mr Mitchell said he is considering appealing the decision.

He added: "It's disappointing; we wanted to restore the pavilion to its former glory. I think the people of Poole deserve better."

The scheme's sand-based stadium had been set out to host beach soccer, beach volleyball, concerts, performing arts events and, during the winter, an ice-rink.
