A large-scale search has taken place to find a missing climber on Dorset's Jurassic Coast.

Police and the coastguard began searching the Durlston area of Swanage after receiving reports that a 26-year-old Southampton man had failed to return home after a solo climbing trip.

The man's car was located in Durlston Road near Durlston Country Park.

Police said some climbing equipment had been found west of Anvil Point but the search had been scaled back.

The man has not been named but his family has been informed.

Ch Insp Bob Acaster, of Dorset Police, said: "Every indication is that he did indeed go climbing on his own and we are very concerned that he may have come to some harm.

"It is possible that he may have gone deep-water climbing, which typically involves using a rope to lower down the cliff and then climbing back up unsupported."
