Man burnt with iron in burglary in Essex
A couple in their 60s were tied up by burglars who burned the man with a household iron, leaving him needing hospital treatment.
The attack happened in the early hours at a house in Woodman Lane, Sewardstonebury, near Chingford.
Two men entered the home, demanding the couple open a safe they did not have.
The men then used the iron to burn the man's back. They were tied up before the thieves stole jewellery, including rings, necklaces and watches.
The couple were left traumatised by the incident, Essex Police said.
The male victim was taken to Whipps Cross Hospital by ambulance and he was later transferred to the specialist burns unit at Broomfield Hospital, Chelmsford, for treatment.
No vehicle was heard or seen before or after the attack.
The two robbers wore balaclavas and gloves. Police said they would be speaking again to the victims to get better descriptions of the men.
Temporary Det Insp Kev Shannon said: "This was an absolutely terrifying ordeal for the couple.
"The robbers used completely unnecessary violence on the victim, leaving him with a very serious burn.
"I urge anyone who has any information about who is responsible to contact detectives."
