Police investigating a £5,000 burglary at a guesthouse in Essex have released a CCTV image of a man they want to speak to.

The man stayed at a guesthouse in Mill Road, Colchester, on 11 May and left early the next day.

The owner then realised that rings, brooches and gold chains had been taken from a private room.

Police have only just released details and said the man left a number of personal items behind.

Det Con Steve King said he believed this was a ploy by the man to make it look as if he would be coming back.

"We think he is from the Reigate area and believe he caught the train to Colchester," he added.

"He is seen on CCTV entering the Tourist Information Office, Queen Street, just before 1630 BST on 11 May.

"A short while later he contacted the private guesthouse on Mile End Road and booked a room for that night."

Mr King appealed for anyone who may recognise the man to contact detectives.
