The keys to a Private Finance Initiative (PFI)-funded hospital wing at an Essex hospital have been handed over to managers.

The first patients will start using the extension in a matter of weeks

The £148m project at Broomfield Hospital in Chelmsford has created 365 beds and a new acute assessment unit.

Five additional operating theatres and new renal, maternity and neonatal units have also been built.

There is a heli-pad on the top floor and the wing is joined to the remaining hospital building by an atrium.

Patients will be able to use the new facilities from early October.

Building work on the project began in December 2007 after being given approval by the Department of Health.
