Three charged over suspected sham wedding in Essex

A 28-year-old Dutch woman, her 35-year-old groom and a 32-year-old witness, both from Nigeria, have been charged over a suspected sham wedding in Essex.

Police and immigration officers stopped a wedding at St John's church, Tilbury, on Tuesday and arrested five people.

A 38-year-old man and a 32-year-old woman, both from Tilbury, were released on bail until 22 September.

Three people were charged with immigration offences and are due before Basildon Magistrates' Court.

The groom is also charged with possessing a false identity document and escaping from lawful custody.

The witness is also charged with remaining in the UK beyond a time limit, possessing a false identity document and making a false declaration to procure marriage.
