Injured boy, 5, 'fell from ice cream van' in Essex

A five-year-old boy found with serious head injuries in a road in Essex had fallen from the back of an ice cream van, police have said.

Officers are investigating after the boy was discovered in Eastways, Canvey, on Wednesday evening.

They are now treating the case as an accident after the boy told his parents he was playing near the van and fell from the back of it as it drove off.

The driver has spoken to officers and inquiries are continuing, police said.

The boy was taken to Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge and is recovering, police said.
