Ex-councillor cleared of attempted murder in Essex
A businessman and former councillor from Essex has been found not guilty of attempting to murder his ex-girlfriend.
Chelmsford Crown Court heard how Leo McKnight, 59, of Roydon, tried to kill Marcia McKnight, 31, in July 2010.
Prosecutors said he was jealous and tried to strangle Ms McKnight - who had changed her surname to his by deed poll - after luring her to his home.
The former Conservative member of Epping Forest District Council maintained that he was framed.
Mr McKnight hugged friends and thanked jurors as he left the courtroom.
