Essex post office armed raider escapes with cash

A robber armed with a handgun threatened a postmaster and fled with a five-figure sum after forcing him to open a safe and tying him up.

The man dressed in a balaclava carried out the raid at the post office in Whitmore Way, Basildon, on Saturday.

The postmaster, a man in his 40s from Grays, was confronted before opening time and the raider escaped by a back entrance in to Hardy Close.

A member of the public who was passing by called police.

The postmaster was left shaken but unhurt.

The raider is described as white, 5ft 10in tall and was wearing gloves, a black jacket, blue jeans, and black moccasin style shoes.

He spoke with an Irish accent, police said.

Dc Sean Lyons said: "The postmaster was simply going about his daily routine when he was threatened by a man with a gun who then tied him up and stole money from the safe.

"This was a terrifying experience and we need people to come forward with as much information as possible in order to catch the person responsible."

Anyone with information is asked to contact Essex Police.
