A woman has died in a collision between a car and a lorry in Essex which has seen the A12 blocked.

The major collision between a Toyota car and the lorry happened at about 1000 BST on Wednesday on the northbound carriageway at the slip road to Witham.

A woman in her 30s, who was a rear seat passenger in the Toyota, died at the scene.

The Toyota driver, a man in his 30s, was airlifted to the Royal London Hospital with serious injuries.

A man who was another passenger was also airlifted to a London hospital.

There were two other casualties in the car, a woman and a man who were both taken by land ambulance to Colchester General Hospital with less serious injuries.

The driver of the lorry was uninjured.

The southbound carriageway was closed to allow two air ambulances to land and then reopened.

One northbound lane was reopened at about 1235 BST.

The on-slip road northbound at Witham was also closed while the emergency services attended but that has also since opened.

The accident involved a black Toyota Rav 4 and a red and white curtain-sided heavy goods vehicle.

Anyone who witnessed the crash has been asked to call Essex Police.
