Council talking to new partner for Canvey skills centre

Education chiefs in Essex are talking to a new partner to run a skills centre in Canvey after a preferred college withdrew from negotiations.

Essex County Council said it was still confident students would be able to take up courses as planned in 2012.

Stephen Castle, cabinet member for education, said that existing Young Persons' Learning Agency funding had been cut but they could still go ahead.

"There are still alternative funding streams that can be explored," he said.

The council has already secured funding to build the Canvey Skills Centre for vocational and educational learning.

"We are in discussions with another provider to establish the necessary learning opportunities," Mr Castle said.

The centre aims to offer training in motor vehicle engineering, construction, health and social care, sport and leisure, hospitality and catering.
