More than £1m will be invested in new gas pipes in Essex.
National Grid is replacing the old metal gas mains in the Chelmsford area with new highly durable plastic pipes.
The company will spend £1.4m on replacing the equipment along a four-mile stretch of the county town.
A spokesman said where possible it would insert the new equipment into the old pipes and deliver the work with a minimum inconvenience to customers.
