Wickford war memorial to get £69,000 facelift

A war memorial in Essex is to get a facelift costing £69,000.

Stonemasons will re-cover and clean much of the existing memorial at Wickford to include it in the new one.

Kevin Blake, from Basildon Council, said: "The work that is going to take place will see a truly fitting memorial for the heroes who gave their lives."

Basildon Council, Veolia Pitsea Marshes Trust, Communities Initiative Fund, Essex Environment Trust and Wickford Memorial Association funded the scheme.

Locally-based Bradford Memorials is due to start work next week and it will be completed before Remembrance Day when the Royal British Legion will be holding a special event.
