Work has begun to repair a multi-storey car park in Chelmsford which has been closed for nearly four months due to safety concerns.

High Chelmer Car Park was closed in March after problems were found with concrete ramps and reinforcement bars.

It is hoped the 1,000 capacity car park will fully reopen in October following the £1.6m project.

Market traders based on the ground floor, who have been relocated, could be back on site by the start of August.

Contractors Gunite (Eastern) have been brought in by Chelmsford Borough Council to complete the work after structural engineers had carried out tests on the ramps and supports.

The council plans to reopen the car park in phases, with the first two floors due to be back in use by mid-August.

Around 35 market traders have been moved to outdoor locations close to the car park.
