Mystery of vanished shop trolleys at supermarket in Essex

More than 800 shopping trolleys have disappeared from an Essex supermarket in the past fortnight.

Police have appealed for information from the general public after the trolleys went missing from the Asda superstore at Eastgate in Basildon.

Asda said: "We've stepped up security and replacement trolleys are on their way to store.

"They haven't been used for shopping and we're working closely with police to discover who the trolley-hogger is."

Police would not be drawn on their suspicions about why the trolleys were taken but shoppers asked by a BBC Essex reporter said metal theft could be one reason.

An Essex police spokeswoman said an investigation was under way and they appealed for the public to contact them with any information they might have.
