Armed police remain at a house in Southend where a man who is feared to be armed is holed up.

Police were called at about 1225 BST on Wednesday to Elizabeth Road, Southend, to carry out an arrest.

When officers arrived they were threatened by the 52-year-old occupant of the house who said he was armed.

Essex Police said two women, who were in the house, left the premises in the early hours of Thursday after negotiations with the man.

Parts of Elizabeth Road and Eastern Esplanade have been cordoned off by officers.

During the night floodlights and generators were taken to the scene.

There were no arrests and no reports of anybody hurt overnight.
