The "vast majority" of an indoor and outdoor events complex in Essex is to close at the end of August.

Owners The Unex Group said the closure was "inevitable" as it had been run at a "substantial loss" for several years.

All but a golf club and a building used for conferencing will be removed at the Unex Towerlands Centre in Braintree.

The 130-acre (52-hectare) venue is used for a variety of events, including equestrian competitions, agricultural shows and music concerts.

In a statement, the firm said these losses had run into millions of pounds.

It added it intended to keep hold of the site and would look into other uses for the land.

These could include an exhibition centre, commercial offices and housing.

Events scheduled to take place from September onwards have had to be cancelled or rearranged.

The venue had also been touted as a potential pre-Olympic training camp for equestrian teams.
