Thieves start firework blasts in Essex

Thieves using a cutting torch to break into a steel container in Essex set off more than a tonne of fireworks being stored inside.

The blaze at Purdeys Industrial Estate, Rochford, led to the evacuation of a care home.

Fire crews were called at about 22:30 BST on Saturday after a motion sensor in the container was activated.

Explosions were reported and the fire continued into Sunday.

A 400m exclusion was set up and a no-fly zone brought in at the site.

"The fire started accidentally but in suspicious circumstances and now the matter has been handed over to the police," an Essex fire service spokesman said.
