Man hurt stopping thieves stealing car with his baby inside

A man was seriously hurt in Essex during an attempt to steal his car while his baby daughter was inside.

Two men tried to snatch the keys from the ignition of the Vauxhall Astra at the Belhus Park Leisure Centre in Aveley on Thursday night, police said.

The Astra was then struck by a stolen Skoda Fabia in an attempt to stop the car leaving the car park.

When the 20-year-old got out to check on his nine-month-old baby, the Skoda struck him, seriously injuring his leg.

Ran away

The girl was unhurt. The victim's 19-year-old partner, who was also in the car, suffered a foot injury in the crash.

The two men who had tried to take the keys and the man who had been driving the Skoda ran away from the scene.

A search of the area was carried out with dog handlers and the police helicopter, to no avail, police said.

Officers have just released details and have asked witnesses to the incident, at about 20:00 BST, to contact them.
