Essex immigration officer admits visa fraud

An immigration officer has admitted issuing visas to people not entitled to stay in the UK.

Samuel Shoyeju, 53, faces prison after pleading guilty to misconduct in a public office at Basildon Crown Court.

Shoyeju, of Canvey Island, Essex, wrongly granted indefinite leave to remain to non-EU residents while working in Croydon for the UK Border Agency in 2008.

The judge said Shoyeju faced a "significant custodial sentence".

Prosecuting, Lucy Kennedy told the court: "There is an inference to be drawn that he was motivated by money.

"He did not do this out of the kindness of his heart. This was not an act of charity."

Stephen Linehan QC said Shoyeju did not accept this suggestion.
