Off-duty police officer run over in Essex

A man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after an off-duty police officer was run over in Essex.

Police said a Ford Ranger was allegedly driven at the officer on a slip road between the A130 and A12, in Chelmsford, at 16:30 GMT on Friday.

The officer was knocked over and sustained a minor knee injury, a police spokeswoman said. The vehicle left the scene.

A 59-year-old man, from Clacton, Essex, was arrested at home soon after.

He was questioned on suspicion of attempted murder and released on police bail until next month.

The incident is alleged to have taken place when the officer got out of his vehicle - a silver Peugeot 207 - and approached the Ford Ranger.

The Essex Police spokeswoman said: "The Ranger was driven at the off-duty officer, striking him, causing him to fall to the ground. He sustained a minor knee injury. The vehicle then left the scene."
