Flats evacuated after part of crane collapses in Essex
About 50 properties have been evacuated in a town in Essex after part of a tower crane collapsed.
The properties in and around Allard Way in Saffron Walden were evacuated by police with residents taken to a rest centre in a local sports complex.
Essex Police said the crane, on a building site, was left in a dangerous condition due to high winds.
The Essex Fire and Rescue Service said 40 people had to leave a block of flats while the crane was made safe.
Assistant Divisional Officer Chris Noakes said: "The boom of the crane has collapsed and is hanging... Crews have assisted in making the area safe which has involved evacuating a block of flats. The residents are being left in the care of the police and local authority.
"Luckily no one has been hurt and the local authority has established a nearby rest centre for everyone who has been evacuated."
