The boy was attacked by two youths near to a recycling centre in Upland Road, on Mersea Island, at on Sunday evening.

His injuries are not thought to be serious and he is being treated at hospital in Colchester.

The attackers are thought to be aged between 16 and 18. One wore a black tracksuit and the other a grey tracksuit.

An Essex Police spokeswoman said: "A 16-year-old youth was stabbed in the stomach in an apparently motiveless attack on Mersea Island.

"Nothing was said, but he was conscious of a pain in his side and found that he had been stabbed."

Police have appealed for witnesses to contact them.
