Woman, 82, hit by car dies on road in Essex village

An 82-year-old woman has died after being knocked down by a car in Essex on Friday at just before 1600 GMT.

Pedestrian Ruth Smith, who lived locally, was hit by a Vauxhall Vectra on Clacton Road in Weeley and pronounced dead at the scene.

The car driver, a 22-year-old man from Clacton, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving.

He was later released on bail until 16 April pending further inquiries. Police appealed for witnesses to contact them.
