Chelmsford attempted rape: Man arrested

A man has been arrested by police investigating the attempted rape of a woman in Essex.

The 28-year-old woman was punched in the face before the attacker tried to rape her while she was on the ground.

Police believed the man was scratched on the face during the attack in New Street, Chelmsford, on 1 March.

A 25-year-old man from Chelmsford was arrested during stop checks in the town centre early in the morning.

The woman was treated for facial injuries including an injured eye, following the attack.

Police warned women not to walk home alone and to be "absolutely vigilant" about personal safety following the attack and two other sexual assaults in Chelmsford.

Officers also arrested a 20-year-old man from Chelmsford after a woman reported an incident of sexual touching while walking in Duke Street, Chelmsford, on Thursday morning.

Officers investigating a number of sexual assaults in Chelmsford since 1 March said they were taking an interest in both arrests.
