Chelmsford attempted rape: Second man arrested

A second man has been arrested in connection with the attempted rape of a woman in Essex.

A 28-year-old woman from Chelmsford was attacked as she walked along New Street in the town shortly before 02:30 GMT on 1 March.

A 42-year-old man from the Rayleigh area was arrested in Chelmsford town centre on suspicion of attempted rape on Saturday.

He is being questioned by detectives at Basildon police station.

A 25-year-old man from Chelmsford remains on police bail until 13 April in connection with the attempted rape.

Police have increased patrols in Chelmsford with plain-clothed officers watching people walking home, a spokesman said.

Women have been told not to walk home alone and to be "absolutely vigilant" about personal safety following several recent attacks in Chelmsford.
