Thames Coastguard finds drifting 'sea scooter' is buoy

A 999 caller who reported a sea scooter user in trouble off the Essex coast had in fact spotted a buoy, it has emerged.

The alarm was raised by a member of the public who thought they saw a sea scooter "drifting" with one person on board off Canvey Island on Sunday.

The coastguard in Canvey investigated the report but found the caller was actually describing a white buoy.

A spokesman for Thames Coastguard said it would rather receive a false alarm than not hear of somebody in trouble.
