Essex Ruth Smith death: Driver Christian Vaughan jailed

A man who drove at 65mph in a 40mph zone has been jailed for six months for killing an 82-year-old former nurse as she crossed the road.

Christian Vaughan's Vauxhall Vectra hit Ruth Smith in Clacton Road, Weeley, after she had spent the afternoon with friends on 20 January last year.

She died at the scene. Vaughan, 23, of The Street, Clacton, admitted causing death by careless driving.

He was also given a three-year driving ban at Chelmsford Crown Court.

'Exemplary life'

Speaking after the case, Insp Keith Whiting said Vaughan had previously been convicted for speeding.

"We're sure, like many speeding drivers, Christian Vaughan never considered that by driving in this manner he could face a prison sentence for causing the death of another person," he said.

"Ruth Smith had spent an exemplary life looking after others in her career as a nurse.

"She had been crossing the road... having chosen a safe place to cross."
