A village street was evacuated following the discovery of "ordnance" in a garden.

People were told to leave homes in Church Road, Boreham, near Chelmsford, just after 12:00 BST.

Police said bomb disposal teams detonated a "non-viable device" about an hour later.

A force spokesman said: "Police found a device in Church Road and the Ministry of Defence was contacted. The road was closed and about 20 homes evacuated."
