A man with a history of violence has been jailed for nine years for the manslaughter of a "gentle giant" he assaulted in a car park.

Liam Holden, 35, died from a head injury he sustained in an attack by Owen Wood in Grays, Essex, in the early hours of 10 March.

Chelmsford Crown Court heard that Wood, 24, kicked and punched his victim as he lay on the floor.

Wood's trial heard that he followed Mr Holden as he left a nightclub.

Wood claimed he acted in self-defence and had been hit by Mr Holden's partner Mandy Patient before fighting with Mr Holden.

'Pumped up'

Mr Holden was described as a "gentle giant" who worked in building security and "did not particularly like going out to nightclubs".

Det Ch Insp Lucy Robinson said after sentencing: "Owen Wood had been to a boxing match and was clearly pumped up and looking for a fight.

"Liam Holden was assaulted with such ferocity that he suffered a devastating and traumatic brain injury which resulted in his death."

In a statement released at the time of Wood's conviction, Mr Holden's family said: "Liam was a good, decent family man whose life has been torn from us in the most horrific circumstances.

"No child should have to grow up without their father, no mother should have to bury their son and no mother should have to raise a child on her own."
