A man accused of murdering his former partner in Essex has appeared in court.

Leanne Meecham, 26, died in hospital on Thursday, a week after she was found stabbed in the throat at her home in Park Street, Westcliff.

Her ex-partner, Simon Meecham, 42, of Southend, Essex, is charged with her murder.

He appeared at Chelmsford Crown Court earlier and was remanded in custody until 30 April when he is expected to enter a plea to the murder charge.

Ms Meecham died of a brain injury caused by a cardiac arrest due to the stab wound, police said.

An inquest into her death will be opened on Tuesday.
