A woman walking home from a night out in Essex was raped and left with head injuries in a "nasty" and "vicious" assault, police said.

The victim was attacked in an underpass near the St Martins/Church Walk area of Basildon town centre after 23:00 BST on Friday.

The attacker is described as white, of a "skinny build" and thought to be in his mid-20s with light coloured hair.

The woman was taken to hospital and treated for head injuries.

Police said the man, wearing a hooded top and jeans, ran off towards The Gore and the Pitsea area.

Det Insp Richard Sage said: "This was a nasty, vicious assault on a young woman which has left her injured and very distressed.

"I need to find the man who did this as soon as possible and urge anyone who thinks that they may have information or believes that they may know who is responsible to contact me and my team."
