A pedestrian has died after being hit by "a number of vehicles" on an Essex road, police have said.

The man, believed to be in his 20s, was walking on the A12's northbound carriageway between Boreham and Hatfield Peverel when he was hit at about 03:45 GMT.

Insp Scott Edgerton from Essex Police said the road had been closed, and would remain shut for several hours.

"As a young man has lost his life, we have a duty to investigate," he said.

"We appreciate the impact any collision - and certainly one of this nature - has on the A12 during rush hour," Insp Edgerton added.

"But we're working with other agencies to get the road open as quickly as we can."
