Three people taking part in a baptism off the Southend seafront had to be rescued in a lifeboat when they were caught by the tide.

Four teenagers and one adult got into difficulty at 17:10 GMT on Sunday about 200 yards (183m) off shore.

The RNLI's search and rescue hovercraft found three of the group "waist deep in water", the spokesman said.

Two others made it to shore themselves. They were all treated for cuts to their feet and early stages of hypothermia.
