More than a dozen people were evacuated from a building in Essex after high winds tore off its roof and left debris strewn across the road.

Residents in South Ockendon, near Grays, spoke of their shock, but there were no serious injuries reported.

Fourteen people are being re-homed while structural engineers assess the damage to the flats in Daiglen Drive.

Half the roof, including chimney stacks, was damaged at about 06:30 BST, Essex Fire Service said.

Onlookers at the scene told BBC Essex: "I didn't even realise the wind was that strong last night."

Meanwhile another said: "We just think, what if we'd lived there? They must have been terrified."
