Southend United assistant manager David Penney charged with assault

Southend United's assistant manager has been charged with assault following an incident hours before the team's bus parade promotion celebration.

David Penney, 50, is accused of assault, assaulting a police officer and criminal damage in connection with the incident in Eastern Esplanade.

Mr Penney, of Lower Oxford Street, Castleford, West Yorkshire, will appear at the town's magistrates on 8 June.

A 24-year-old woman from Yorkshire was cautioned for assault.

Southend United is yet to comment on the incident, which happened at 03:00 BST on Sunday.

The Blues held an open-top bus parade in the town on Monday after getting promoted to League One following their play-off final win against Wycombe Wanderers at Wembley.
