Westcliff flat fire: Man held after pregnant woman dies

A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a pregnant woman died following a tower block fire in Essex.

Khabi Abrey, 30, of Southend, was one of seven people taken to hospital after the fire on the ninth floor of the Balmoral Road flats in Westcliff-on-Sea on Saturday.

Ms Abrey and her unborn baby died in hospital on Monday night.

A 47-year-old man from Westcliff has been arrested and is being questioned at Rayleigh police station.

A post mortem examination has given the cause of Mrs Abrey's death as complications arising following the inhalation of fire fumes.

Her unborn baby died of cardiac arrest due to Mrs Abrey's inhalation of fire fumes.

Essex Police have appealed for witnesses to the suspected arson attack come forward.

The fire is being treated as suspicious.
