Man charged over attempted theft of Cheltenham statue
A 35-year-old man has been charged with attempting to steal a half-tonne bronze statue in Cheltenham.
Police were called to Sandford Park at about 0440 BST on Saturday after reports that two men were seen trying to remove the statue.
One man was located by a police dog and arrested. The second man was not found.
A police spokeswoman said the statue was believed to have been collected by parks staff for safekeeping as it was no longer secure.
The statue, entitled The Weathered Man, depicts a life-size figure lying on the concrete cap of a giant drain cover, which is part of a £21m flood relief system.
The arrested man, from Evesham, was charged and bailed to appear at Cheltenham Magistrates Court on 27 September.
