Police investigating a fatal accident on a major route into Cheltenham are appealing for witnesses.

A 41-year-old man died when he was hit by a vehicle on the A40 Golden Valley bypass near Churchdown at 1900 BST on Monday night.

A car then collided with an ambulance attending the scene and the woman driver of the car was injured.

The bypass was closed both ways for more than eight hours whilst investigations were carried out.

One lane of the Cheltenham-bound carriageway remained closed on Tuesday morning and was reopened just before 1230 BST

The woman, who suffered chest injuries, was taken to the Gloucestershire Royal Hospital after being cut out of her car.

It is not certain how the man who died came to be on the A40, but police believe he "came on to the bypass from the side of the road".

Insp Roddy Gosden said: "Officers are investigating and would urge anyone who was in the area at the time and hasn't already spoken to police to contact us."
