Work has begun to build a new primary school which will be Gloucestershire's first parent and community-led school.

The school in Coopers Edge in Brockworth will be managed as a trust which was chosen by the county council following a competition to run it.

The £6m cost is being funded by an agreement between a consortium of housing developers and the council.

The school is due to open in September in temporary classrooms with up to 105 places increasing to 420 once complete.

The county council asked for bids to run the school following a consultation process in 2008.

The Coopers Edge School Parent Community Group in partnership with the Robinswood Trust were chosen.

Joanne Vickers, chair of the Coopers Edge Trust, said: "We are very excited that building is now starting, three years since the first members of the community came together to work on the project."

The school building is expected to be completed by spring 2012.
