Police investigating a sexual assault in Cheltenham have released CCTV of a man they want to speak to.

The images were taken before the 20-year-old woman was attacked in Grosvenor Place South in the early hours of Friday.

She was assaulted at about 0310 GMT after leaving the Lace nightclub by a man who also left the club and accompanied her along the street.

Det Insp Steve Bean urged women not to walk home alone at night.

'Avoid alleyways'

He said: "We do not want to cause any unnecessary alarm or distress but we are urging people to be aware of their personal safety. Don't walk home alone at night, try to get a taxi or stay with friends.

"If you are walking home then always choose well-lit routes and avoid alleyways or shortcuts. Be aware of your surroundings and of anyone who may be acting suspiciously.

"Do not engage in conversations with strangers and if you are concerned for your safety then contact the police."

The CCTV pictures shows the man walking through the alleyway leading onto Albion street accompanied by a woman. The woman has been erased from the image.

He asked anyone who recognised the man to contact the police.
