Hundreds of drivers still using Quedgeley underpass

More than 500 motorists have been fined £60 each over 11 days for using an underpass in Gloucester.

Gloucestershire County Council put the camera on the Kingsway underpass in Quedgeley in an attempt to deter drivers from using the shortcut.

Only cyclists, taxis, buses and emergency vehicles are allowed to use the route.

A spokesman said the council had put up bright yellow warning signs on the approach to the underpass.

"Since the camera was switched on on 23 April, 530 people have been caught," he said.

"It's very disappointing that so many drivers are still using the underpass despite the clear restrictions.

"We have worked hard to warn people about the CCTV camera and the possibility of a fine and I had hoped that people may think twice about doing it now that the fines have been introduced."
