Concrete slab 'thrown' from M5 motorway bridge

A driver on the M5 escaped unhurt when a concrete slab hit his car after being thrown from a motorway bridge.

Gloucestershire Constabulary said the incident took place in the early hours of Sunday.

The slab is thought to have been dropped onto the road between Fiddington and Elmstone Hardwicke, just after junction nine.

Lanes one and two were closed for 30 minutes in the northbound direction while an investigation took place.

Pc Tim Griffiths said the heavy piece of stone shattered on the road and then bounced up against the car's bonnet and windscreen.

"The ramifications of someone throwing or dropping this item from the overbridge are almost unthinkable," said Pc Griffiths.

"If this slab had hit a windscreen full-on we could easily have been investigating a death."

Gloucestershire Constabulary are asking any witnesses to contact them.
