Forest of Dean man arrested in bird theft probe

A man in the Forest of Dean has been arrested on suspicion of the theft and sale of endangered birds of prey.

Gloucestershire Police carried out a search warrant on the Staunton home of the 66-year-old on Tuesday and seized his computer and documentation.

Pc Jon Palfrey said the force was "determined" to clamp down on wildlife crime and strong action would be taken where wrongdoing was uncovered.

The man has been released on police bail pending further inquiries.

The police search was carried out in conjunction with the National Wildlife Crime Unit (NWCU) and the Animal Health and Veterinary Laboratories Agency (AHVLA).

Andy McWilliam, investigative support officer for NWCU, said "dealing with the illegal trade in endangered animals is a national wildlife crime priority".
